The Telemarketing Guide to Keeping Your Mind & Your Wallet Safe

Say what you will about telemarketing scam artists, you have to admit they can be pretty clever.
Here are three B2C scams currently in operation:
1. A telemarketer calls you and tells you they’re with Microsoft and that there’s a problem with your computer. You go to your computer and they get you to load a tool which generates errors and warnings. You pay them a fee to fix it. Problem is, there never was a problem with your computer. The errors were generated by the tool you accessed.
2. You’re called by your telephone service provider. They tell you you have an outstanding dept and are about to be disconnected. They tell you you’re line will be disconnected for a few minutes as proof. You hang up the telephone and when you lift the receiver, there’s no dial tone. The agent calls you back and offers to process the payment to prevent any further disconnection. You pay. The trick: the agent on the other end never hung up. They just hit the mute button. So, when you picked up the phone after hanging up, there was no dial tone.
3. You’re called by your bank. They offer to raise your credit limit- but, you need to verify your information first. They get all your details. You go about your business… only to discover that, instead of a raised credit limit, you now have an empty bank account. Greed got the better of you.
